ROSEVILLE, MN-Rosedale Center will tear down the former Mervyn's department store on the mall's east end and build a 182,000-sf lifestyle center that will feature a 14-screen theater and new stores. The Roseville City Council approved the plan from Jones Lang LaSalle, the manager of the one-million-sf regional mall, earlier this week. The plan is significantly smaller than a plan presented late last year in which the 170,000-sf Mervyn's store would be reused and 132,679 sf would be added for a total space of 302,679 sf.
John Schupp, senior vice president of retail for Jones Lang LaSalle, says that the growing influence and popularity of lifestyle centers prompted the changes. The popularity of Grand Avenue, a popular shopping area in St. Paul, and Tamarack Village in Woodbury, both have proven the popularity of this approach.
"This type of development has become so popular that there are a number of tenants that will no longer go into the mall," Schupp told the city in a letter explaining the plan changes.
