DULUTH, GA-Gwinnett County commissioners have approved a development permit for Zen Urban Resort, $100-million mixed-use complex in suburban Duluth, about 20 miles northeast of Downtown Atlanta. The plan for Zen Urban Resort calls for a 12-story office building, a five-story hotel and an estimated 50,000 sf of retail-restaurant space on 12 acres at Shackleford Road and Steve Reynolds Boulevard.
As previously reported, the developer, locally based Apek Creative Development, headed by Michael Kim, is negotiating with New York-based Sheraton Hotels and resorts on the hotel component.
The county's OK comes as elected officials work on a separate proposal that would open the door to high-rise mixed-use developments in Gwinnett County. However, county staffers tell GlobeSt.com the high-rise projects would be permitted only near selected areas such as the 1.9-million-sf Mall of Georgia, the 1.24-million-sf Gwinnett Place Mall, the Sugarloaf corridor and Jimmy Carter Boulevard at Interstate 85.
