Parkside Apartments, at 7780 East 23rd Ave., is a small solution to a big problem facing Denver and other cities across the US. About 10,200 people are homeless in the Denver area, the non-profit group says.
Parkside is the type of development supported by Mayor John Hickenlooper, who has launched a 10-year plan to end homelessness in Denver. Parkside is an example of developing permanent and transitional affordable housing for low-income families and individuals.
Mercy Housing has 18,000 units nationwide. Some 70% of Mercy Housing's residents are families, 20% are seniors and the remaining 10% are people with special needs, such as the formerly homeless, people with HIV/AIDS, and the developmentally disabled.
