UCF's goal was $25 million to be raised from private sources in 90 days. Another $25 million will be matched by the state, according to UCF president John Hitt. The balance of the projected $58-million development cost would come from private sources.
The latest donors to the UCF project are multifamily developer Alan Ginsburg and his wife, Harriett, through their Ginsburg Family Foundation, who are pledging $4 million to help build a 50-acre medical campus that hasn't broken ground or even been approved yet by the state's board of governors. The governors postponed their Nov. 17 vote on the project to mid-March 2006.
Other gifts from developers for the UCF project came from Steve Walsh and his wife, Paula who are donating $2.5 million; Beat Kahli and his wife, Jill, developer of the Avalon mixed-use undertaking; Dick Nunis and his wife, Mary, both former Walt Disney World executives now involved in development projects; and Larry Pino and his wife, Janet, founder of locally based Dynetech Corp. which is joint venturing Dynatech Center, a $40-million, 27-story office-retail-apartment project Downtown with Lincoln Property Co.
Orlando car dealer Al Burnett and his wife, Nancy, have pledged $10 million to help build a biomedical-sciences building within the planned medical center. Hughes Supply Co., a locally based national supplier of commercial construction supplies, is giving $1 million to the UCF project.
Walsh is the managing partner and founder of Charleston, SC-based Broad Street Partners which is developing the $175-million, 39-story, 276-unit Tradition Towers condominiums Downtown. The firm's Florida offices are in suburban Winter Park.
Jim Pugh, owner of Winter Haven-based Epoch Properties Inc., and his wife, Alexis, donated $5 million to the University of Florida in Gainesville, as GlobeSt.com previously reported. The money will go for the development of the Bob Graham Center for Public Service building. Orlando investor and developer Joe Lewis has pledged a total $20.8 million in cash and land for the UCF med school, as GlobeSt.com also previously reported.
