NEWINGTON, CT-Stew Leonard's has signed a lease for 115,000 sf of space at the Newington Fair Plaza here at the site of a former Caldor's store that has sat dark for about seven years. Stew Leonard's officials say the new store should open by early 2007.

The company plans to invest approximately $15 million in upgrades to the space. Plans include an in-store bakery, a specialty cheese aging room and prepared foods area with indoor seating, a café and ice cream parlor.

Charter Realty & Development took over the leasing and redevelopment of the property that is owned by American National Insurance Co. of Galveston, TX six months ago, company officials say. Jeffrey L. Nable and Steve Crowley of SCA Commercial represented Stew Leonard's. Dan Zelson of Charter Realty represented the shopping center ownership.

The Newington store, located on Berlin Turnpike, will be Stew Leonard's third Connecticut store and is located 10 miles outside of Hartford. The firm already operates stores in Norwalk and Danbury, CT and in Yonkers. Stew Leonard's has plans to open new stores in Orange, CT and East Farmingdale, NY. Other retailers at the Newington Fair Plaza include Toys "R" Us, Stickley Furniture and a soon-to-be built 136,000-sf Sam's Club.
