The City Hall Block, totaling 1.57 acres, sits adjacent to Pioneer Park and two blocks from the Sound Transit commuter rail station, which provides direct linkage to and from Seattle. The block is the centerpiece of the city's overall Civic Center Project, which is aimed at renewing the urban core. Recent Civic Center improvements include the new Puyallup Public Library and the Pioneer Park Pavilion.
The site is called the City Hall Block not only because it will be home to a new City Hall but also because it is home to the old City Hall. The 50,000-sf building served as City Hall until it was badly damaged in a 1949 earthquake, forcing city departments to be scattered throughout the city. The new City Hall will allow city officials to consolidate numerous city departments back into a single building. The new City Hall and the first phase of condominiums are anticipated to be substantially complete by the end of 2007.
