The chain is targeting a higher-end consumer in some of its stores by offering a greater variety of organic-food items. Wal-Mart is also offering a larger selection of electronics, featuring more brands.
Additionally, the retailer is going more upscale in the home category, where it has rolled out such items as luxury towels and bedding. Its Metro 7 clothing line for women will also be expanded and the company will offer it in 1,500 units, up from the 800 they are currently in.
This year the Bentonville, AR-based company is also opening 18 of its Neighborhood Market grocery stores, adding to the 100 already in operation. But Wal-Mart's biggest growth will come from its Supercenters, 267 of which it is opening, up from the 1,980 it operated by the end of last year.
Overseas, the company is testing new concepts for its UK-based Asda chain. The concepts, which are small discount stores, are called Asda Living and Asda Essentials. Management plans to double the number of those units, from five to 10.
