Management has plans to open 30 of the new units by Dec. 31, as well as an additional 35 in each 2007 and the following year. There are currently 10 units under construction, primarily in the Southeast.
Same-store sales for the quarter ended April 18 were up 5.7% for franchise-operated units, which make up just under a third of Bruegger's total store count. Gross sales company wide were $28.7 million, up from $24.3 million the year before.
During the quarter Bruegger's completed the renovation of all company-owned units. Management seeks to boost the company's franchise and is looking for operators to fuel growth across the country.
Last month Bruegger's executives announced the chain's first Alaskan stores. A franchiser there is scheduled to open its first store in the state by the fall, and plans a total of five in Anchorage and Fairbanks by 2010.
