The $230-million, 360,000-sf cancer research facility will be constructed on a parking lot in Kendall Square next to the school's existing biology building, and will be the largest of the school's new facilities. The $185-million Sloan School of Management will be constructed on Memorial Drive, next to Sloan's current headquarters. The school's new $120-million, 163,000-sf Media Lab will expand the current facilities in Kendall Square while the $104-million, 265,000-sf apartment complex will house graduate students on Albany Street.

In the past two years, MIT has opened two new buildings, a $175-million Brain and Cognitive Sciences Complex and the $300-million Stata Center.

MIT's expansion plans come as other area schools plan additions to their own campuses. Harvard University, Boston College, Northeastern University, Emerson College and Boston University have all recently announced significant expansions, as GlobeSt.com previously reported.
