POMPANO BEACH, FL-Wal-Mart is expanding its Neighborhood Market store concept with plans to open a 59,000-sf store at Pompano Marketplace at 1259 South Federal Highway. The store is slated to open in the second quarter of 2007.

Wal-Mart is acquiring the lease of the former anchor tenant, Winn Dixie. Other tenants in the shopping plaza include Stein Mart, Jo-Ann Fabrics & Crafts, Dollar Tree and Carrabba's Italian Grill. "It's a win-win situation," Terranova chairman Stephen Bittel tells GlobeSt.com. "Wal-Mart, which is seeking expansion for its neighborhood store concept, will get excellent exposure to the growing Pompano Beach submarket. And at the same time it will generate huge traffic, which will benefit every tenant at the shopping center and provide an exceptional value shopping opportunity to area consumers."

The store will be Wal-Mart's second site in South Florida, which the company has targeted for expansion of its newest store format. The other store is located in Coral Springs. Wal-Mart launched the new store concept in 1998, which is smaller than a traditional Wal-Mart so that it fits into community shopping centers, and customers shop at the store more often than a Wal-Mart or Wal-Mart Supercenter. The new format features a full line of groceries and bakery goods, a full deli with a wide variety of fresh prepared foods and non-food items such as cosmetics, liquor, paper goods, pet products and hardware items.
