In addition to accommodating increasing demand, the projects are at least in part required by state law. The law requires that hospitals meet state seismic safety guidelines no later than 2015, and by 2013 in most cases.
Stanford Hospital is currently a 456-bed facility and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital is a 257-bed facility. The projects will turn them into a 600-bed facility and a 400-bed facility, respectively.
Preliminary plans for Stanford Hospital include removing 700,000 sf of existing space and adding 1.4 million sf. Plans for Lucile Packard Children's Hospital call for adding 425,000 sf.
At a study session Nov. 20 with the Palo Alto City Council, hospital representatives said they would file formal development applications in 2007.
