BOSTON-Berklee College of Music is planning a substantial expansion that will more than double the size of the school's 600,000-sf campus within the next decade. The project will replace the Berklee Performance Center and a two-story academic building currently located on that corner at the school's Back Bay campus.
Plans call for the creation of the school's first high-rise dorm on the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Boylston Street that would house up to 600 students along with theater space for performances. The 25- to 30-story complex is set to be completed by 2012. Also planned is a 5,000-sf "coffeehouse" on Boylston Street that will give music students a place to showcase their talents, a school official says.
While no price tag has yet been set on the project, the school expects to spend between $200 million and $300 million on the project over the next 10 years.
Berklee officials expect to present plans for the project the Boston Redevelopment Authority in February or March.
