"FBI and GSA will meet in the near future to jointly determine a new area of consideration," the agency said in a statement.
The original plan called for replacing the 17-story office building at 11000 Wilshire Blvd. with two towers totaling approximately one million sf. Earlier this month, the GSA said the Wilshire site was the best of 35 sites the agency had studied. The decision to abandon the redevelopment plan follows nearby residents' concerns about traffic and terrorism, concerns that were taken to heart by public officials.
Two weeks ago, city council members Jack Weiss and Bill Rosendahl said the city would join any lawsuit filed by community opponents to challenge the project. Last week, US Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA) sent a letter to the FBI last week asking them to drop the project and explore alternatives.
"This is good news," Feinstein said in a statement. "There was an insurmountable amount of neighborhood opposition in a corridor of major traffic congestion."
