New York City-based Rockefeller Group Development Corp. andKimco Developers Inc., the developers of the 54-acre, $235-millionMiramar Town Center, will begin building the two-story fitnesscenter at the corner of Red and Hiatus roads in the next month. Itis slated for completion early next year.

24 Hour Fitness director of real estate Bill Oughton describedthe town center as a strategic location for the company. "Webelieve we will receive tremendous support from the residents ofMiramar as we expand our presence in South Florida through our ShaqSport Clubs," Oughton says, in a prepared statement.

Construction on Miramar Town Center, located on Red Road betweenPembroke Road and Miramar Parkway, began in April 2006. It willinclude 133 townhomes, 355 condominiums, 16 live/work units,175,000 sf of retail and restaurants, more than 50,000 sf of officespace and a mass transit hub. The entire complex is slated forcompletion in late 2009 or early 2010.

"The very nature of the town center is dependent upon havingviable retail," says Rockefeller Group Development Corp. Floridaoffice vice president and regional development officer Edgar Jonestells GlobeSt.com. "This is the first tenant signed for theproject, but there will be others announced soon."

Professional basketball player Shaquille O'Neal has an agreementwith 24 Hour Fitness to create 24 Hour Fitness Shaq Sport Clubs.The first one opened in Miami in 2005. The company also recentlysigned a 50,000-sf lease at the Catalina Centre shopping centerlocated at 1703 North Congress Ave. in Boynton Beach to operateanother club.
