The Dorset Hotel will be merged with the Catalina Hotel at 1732 and 1756 Collins Ave., but will remain open during renovations. A grand opening for the project is planned for the fall.

Catalina Hotel owner Alan Lieberman tells GlobeSt.com that the Dorset Hotel underwent a gut renovation about five years ago, so renovations will consist of redecorating the property. Plans also call for adding a sushi restaurant, conference room/library and a rooftop terrace for corporate events.

Because the Dorset and Catalina hotels are close to the convention center, the properties attract business travelers in addition to tourists. "With the acquisition and renovation of the Dorset, the Catalina expands its appeal to target business travelers who want to stay on Collins Avenue without mortgaging their house," Lieberman says.

The Dorset and Catalina hotels are part of the South Beach Group. Other hotels in the group include the Chesterfield Hotel at 855 Collins Ave., the Hotel Chelsea at 944 Washington Ave., the Mercury Resort at 100 Collins Ave., the Hotel Shelley at 844 Collins Ave. and the Whitelaw Hotel at 808 Collins Ave.
