GWCAR is the only association in the DC area to focus specifically on commercial brokers. The challenge of heading such an organization is making it relevant for its entire membership base, Fulcher tells GlobeSt.com. Fulcher wants to see the organization put more focus on the suburbs, for instance. "One criticism I have heard is the GWCAR is too focused on the District. What we want to do is provide more value to everyone."
Continuing education is a perennial need in the commercial broker community, and will again be a focus for the organization under Fulcher's tutelage. In the spring, for instance, the organization plans to launch a five-class series on best practices in commercial lending. "We will have a tenant broker, a landlord broker, a lawyer, architect and project planner each present their view of the process and what they need from the other players--what the lawyer needs from the landlord broker for example--to make a project succeed," he says.
Another change will be the creation of a senior advisory council. GWCAR currently has a board in place; however, the organization would like to see more involvement from senior level executives. Fulcher is working with others on putting together lists of prospective names. There will be 15 representatives each from Virginia, Maryland and the District.
Since joining Studley in 1986, Fulcher has been recognized as one of the firm's top brokers and has been a six-time winner of the its "Transaction of the Year" award, including the merger of three buildings on Pennsylvania Avenue to accommodate a 525,000-sf lease a few years ago.
