Skodowski already spearheaded a LEED certification initiative for the company. Initially, the firm worked with the Chicago Transportation Authority on having its headquarters receive gold certification with LEED, he tells GlobeSt.com. The firm also bid out janitorial services for more than two million sf it manages in Chicago and was able to have "green cleaning" without an increase in cost for the those options, he says. "We want to manage our clients' facilities in as sustainable as a manner as we possibly can," Skodowski says.
The firm will also try to manage its own facilities in a sustainable manner and review suppliers for sustainability practices, he says. "We have to have our house in order as well," Skodowski says.
The new position was created as a "next step" for Transwestern, Skodowski says. "We really needed to have an organized focus instead of each of the regions trying to do their own thing," he says. Skodowski did not want to discuss details yet on his planned initiatives in the new position, but says that the firm will build upon what it has already done. Transwestern will have a pilot program with the US Green Buildings Council, with details to be announced in the near future, he adds.
