The facility was approved just more than two years ago by the Authority's commissioners, carrying an original price tag of approximately $20 million. That number has risen to a final total of $29 million. Besides monitoring traffic flow and overseeing general operations of the two highways, it will also provide dispatch facilities for the New Jersey State Police.
The site itself is the original headquarters of the New Jersey Highway Authority, which separately operated the Garden State Parkway before the NJHA was merged with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority during the administration of former Gov. James McGreevey. The headquarters staffs of the two authorities were merged into 100,000 sf at Mack-Cali Realty's Woodbridge II building nearby. The TMC project incorporates the former NJHA building with new construction and a new infrastructure.
