DUBAI, UAE-The ruler of Dubai has announced plans for a $60 billion mixed-use project that will create an entire city in the desert. The Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens development will contain more than 800 million sf of residential, commercial, hotel, parkland and houses of worship, according to architect Eric Kuhne with London-based CivicArts in a statement released today.

Dubai Properties will soon begin work on the project, Kuhne said in the statement. A large portion of the project will be bringing in canals from the Persian Gulf. “Instead of pouring sand into the Gulf, we will bring the nourishing waters of the Gulf into a new desert oasis,” Kuhne said. A public relations official for the project did not return a request for comment.
