That funding boost comes in the form of $179 million designatedfor construction at the three bases, part of the 2009 defensespending bill passed by Congress. The funding will be added to theapproximately $500 million of construction currently under way atthe three sites, and it's all part of the Pentagon's plan to turnthe three bases with geographic proximity into what militaryofficials are calling Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

"The South Jersey economy will benefit tremendously from newconstruction jobs," says Rep. Jim Saxton (R-NJ), whose districtincludes McGuire and part of Fort Dix, in a statement. "The newjoint base itself will benefit from the modernization it needs toreceive new missions."
