This will be Minneapolis-based Room & Board's first Southeast store, with an expected opening in spring 2009. The three-story structure, located at 14th Street and Howell Mill Road, is actually a 1910-era meat-packing building.
Michael Phillips, partner at White Provision development company, says the retailer was drawn in by the uniqueness of the space and the location, which has long been an "insiders home furnishings district. There is an authenticity in the architecture and co-tenancy here, creating an opportunity for Room & Board," he says.
The remainder of the mixed-use development includes 80,000 sf of retail, 70,000 sf of office and 98 condo units to be finished in March. An adjacent 120,000 sf of tenanted retail is part of the Westside Provisions District, says Phillips.
Room & Board is next looking for locations in Washington, DC, Boston, Seattle and Miami, according to a press release. "They are looking to acquire a similar space in Miami out of the general retail zone, probably somewhere around the Design District," says Sokolsky.
