One of the chief goals of the San Pedro Waterfront Project is toconnect the new waterfront facilities with the City of San Pedrowith "visitor-serving commercial opportunities in and around theport," according to a Port of L.A. description of the project. Tothat end, the plan calls for revitalizing Ports O' Call Village, a150,000-square-foot retail and tourism area that would be expandedby 375,000 square feet, including a 75,000-square-foot conferencecenter. The port intends to partner with a master developer tocreate a design for the Ports O' Call redevelopment.

Port planners envision that along with the 375,000 square feetof commercial development, the project will require expandedPacific Electric Red Car line service to Cabrillo Beach and otherpoints along the waterfront.

Another facet of the plan would develop new cruise ship terminalfacilities at Kaiser Point, in the Outer Harbor. The new cruiseship berths would allow the port to accommodate larger cruisevessels as they are introduced into service by the cruise industryover the next two decades. Existing cruise berths in the InnerHarbor at the Port would continue to serve smaller cruiseships.
