One of the chief goals of the San Pedro Waterfront Project is to connect the new waterfront facilities with the City of San Pedro with "visitor-serving commercial opportunities in and around the port," according to a Port of L.A. description of the project. To that end, the plan calls for revitalizing Ports O' Call Village, a 150,000-square-foot retail and tourism area that would be expanded by 375,000 square feet, including a 75,000-square-foot conference center. The port intends to partner with a master developer to create a design for the Ports O' Call redevelopment.
Port planners envision that along with the 375,000 square feet of commercial development, the project will require expanded Pacific Electric Red Car line service to Cabrillo Beach and other points along the waterfront.
Another facet of the plan would develop new cruise ship terminal facilities at Kaiser Point, in the Outer Harbor. The new cruise ship berths would allow the port to accommodate larger cruise vessels as they are introduced into service by the cruise industry over the next two decades. Existing cruise berths in the Inner Harbor at the Port would continue to serve smaller cruise ships.
Over the seven years from start to completion, the port would complete eight miles of waterfront promenade, creating public open spaces that would include 27 acres of new parks, plazas and landscaped areas. It would improve pedestrian and bicycle access to the San Pedro Waterfront as well.
The port will be gathering public comment on the draft EIR until Dec. 8. The public comment period is one of a number of steps that would have to be completed, including the drafting of a final EIR, before work could begin on the project.
