The FBI is relocating these operations--which need general office space, training rooms, an auditorium, underground parking and auxiliary services--from its current location in Tysons Corner. The set-back requirements, put into effect after the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks, were an issue; also the agency was seeking a sustainable building.

Peterson Cos. has a LEED-Gold rating for the office building and expects LEED-Gold for the Visitor Control Center. It recycled construction waste, used low emitting adhesives and sealants, certified wood and regional materials and achieved a 40% reduction in projected water use. The facility consists of two rectangular five story wings made with pre-cast concrete panels, with aluminum windows and cultured stone screen walls and wing walls. Each wing has large, open work areas that allows the FBI to reconfigure its personnel as necessary.

There is a five-story high atrium and a fifth floor lobby that features a Wall of Heroes with the names of the 34 FBI agents killed in the line of duty during the bureau's history. Wisnewski Blair & Assoc. is the architect. Hitt Contracting is the general contractor.

The building is the latest addition to Innovation@Prince William , a 1,500-acre park that is steadily adding tenants. Anchored by George Mason University's life science campus, the park counts American Type Culture Collection, Mediatech, Micron, the Virginia Department of Forensic Science, Covance, Assett Management, Baker Engineering, Christopher Consulting, Comcast, EnviroSolutions, Logis-Tech, NCS Technologies, Progeny Systems, ProLogic, and SAIC among its occupants.
