The downwardspiral began decades ago--precipitated by union unreality andmanagement short-sightedness. Overseas competitors now set up shopin Southern right to work states, paying assembly line employeesless in more state-of-the-art factories without cumbersome workrules. GM, Chrysler and to a lesser extent Ford kept lobbying andforestalling higher fuel efficiency standards, while building gasguzzlers in aging factories.
