All three organizations have a standards system in place to guide developers in sustainable development. They are USGBC's LEED rating system, BREEAM in the UK and Green Star in Australia. The tools and measurement systems that the three agencies will develop under the MOU will be as important to sustainability as the agency's iconic certification systems, Michelle Moore, SVP for USGBC tells GlobeSt.com.
For instance, having a common measurement system for CO2 equivalents in buildings would be key to any global cap and trade marketplace, she says. The three agencies have cooperated in other endeavors, Moore adds, but nothing close to the scale that has been outlined in the MOU. "There is nothing equivalent on the market right now. This is new territory."
