MIAMI-Leon Medical Centers has broken ground on its sixth facility in the county. The Miami-Dade Community Council 10 approved development of the 84,670-square-foot medical building last month at a five-acre site formerly occupied by a Toyota dealership.

Fort Lauderdale-based Moss & Associates is constructing the four-story building at 150 NW 79th Ave. and expects to finish by November. Coral Gables-based MGE Architects is designing the structure. The $20-million center will create up to 400 new jobs and feature services including primary care, specialist care, on-site pharmacy, dental, optical and diagnostic.

"As a leader in South Florida's Medicare healthcare sector, Leon Medical Centers delivers highly personalized service, with state-of-the-art medical technology in a warm and welcoming patient environment," Moss & Associates project executive Ed Baro said in a release. "The facility's natural lighting, glass elevators and upscale finishes will all contribute to a caring, holistic atmosphere."

The healthcare provider, which is exclusively dedicated to serving the needs of Medicare patients, also has a center that will open in West Kendall sometime this year. Leon Medical Centers are owned and operated by the Leon family and company founder Benjamin Leon Jr., who has more than 45 years of experience in managed care.
