The project will be built around a new fire station, Engine Co. 13. The city investigated other locales--such as New York City--to see if such a structure would work, the spokesman says. "This is the first time we have developed on top of a fire station but it works in other cities so we are confident it will work here."

All together, E Street Development will build more than 450,000 square feet of office space, a café and training center run by the DC Central Kitchen, more than 300 parking spaces and a 22,000-square-foot fire station. It will also include community space for after school programs run by Kid Power DC.

The new fire station will be built as a part of the project's first phase on a site less than two blocks away from the existing fire station at 450 6th St., SW, so that Engine Co. 13 will remain fully operational during the project's construction. E Street was one of three teams who submitted bids for the project. The team is expected to break ground on the first phase of the project next year.
