With the Obama Administration stating goals of improvingexisting buildings' by 25% in 10 years, training on the latesttechnology is essential, according to Building Owners and ManagersInstitute International (BOMI), an Annapolis, MD-based nonprofitorganization focus on educating property, facility and systemsprofessionals. While the SMC designation has existed for years, itnow incorporates training and information about energy consumptionand adherence to emission regulations, and continues to adapt tochanging technology.

"It has evolved, and is under construction as we speak," saysBOMI trustee Lenny Jachimowicz, FMA, vice president of engineeringfor Marriott International. "The curriculum has evolved over time,and has recently undergone some changes to contemporize thetechnology section within certain parts of the curriculum."

The SMC certificate is a preparation for the Systems MaintenanceAdministrator (SMA) designation, one of four offered by BOMI, whichalso includes: Real Property Administrator (RPA), the FacilitiesManagement Administrator (FMA), and the Systems MaintenanceTechnician (SMT).
