SAIC is using the new building--which is seeking Gold LEED certification--to consolidate at six other offices that it maintains in the park, Crum tells GlobeSt.com. The move is also an expansion for SAIC, he says, which wanted to maximize the efficiencies of having its employees under one roof. SAIC recently landed new contract awards from the Defense Department and is bringing roughly 200 new hires on board to work on DOD contracts. SAIC will begin moving into the facility this summer as its leases expire in other buildings.
Located directly off Interstate 95, Franklin Center broke ground July 2007 and delivered in January 2009. Besides the Gold LEED certification that it hopes to get, the building will also be fitted with SAIC's Secure Converged Solution--a LAN architecture that reduces IT life cycle costs, increases bandwidth and enhances security. Crum says that the Gold certification--or rather, the building's design to that standard--was one of the reasons SAIC selected it. According to Howard County Executive Ken Ulman, this is one of the largest leases of office space in the Baltimore region this decade.
Asking rates for the remainder of the space are in the low $30s per square foot, Crum says. SAIC is occupying six out of the seven floors available.
