Planners help municipalities by providing the appropriateguidelines that keep mixed-use communities and large urban areasoperating smoothly. When the appropriate principles and guidanceare not applied to a project, neighborhood, or community, theproblems that arise can be far reaching and long lasting.

To create effective and memorable places, there are a number ofurban design principles that are employed. Design professionalsconsider every detail in understanding what makes certain placesmore memorable and more successful than others. Urban design andplanning professionals are trained to look not only at individualbuildings and thoroughfares, but to understand how groups ofbuildings work together and how the spaces between those buildingcreate memorable and usable places.

In general, our communities and neighborhoods are becoming moreurban.
