Zimmermann served as the CFO at Chicago-based ADA for six years, simultaneously working as CEO of ADA Business Enterprises Inc., a wholly-owned for-profit subsidiary of the ADA. He also worked 16 years at the American Medical Association, also based out of Chicago, where he spent nine years as CFO and VP of financial services and real estate. Zimmermann graduated from Chicago's DePaul University.
