The essential takeaways from the three-hour event, attended by nearly 50 local job seekers from a variety of disciplines, were that you and your skills are the product, and that the job hunt itself should be treated as a full-time, five-day-a-week pursuit. Among the other highlights of the event, which leveled sobering news about the state of unemployment, as well as practical advice for winning the search, were:
- There are at least six competitors for every corporate position;
- You will not get a job simply because you are the most qualified person on the list;
- If you can't tell a potential employer your worth, why should they hire you?
- Luck is a matter of preparation.
"Remember," he said, "this is not about you. It is about the company. So give the punch line--the outcomes--first."
Zezas also urged his audience not to shun the network once they reached their goal. Relationships need to be maintained, he stated. "Your career, for the rest of your life--will be managing transition," he concluded.
