The 2220 Broadway location, which the retailer has occupied since 1993, "is among Filene's Basement's most popular and successful in the New York region," says Cushman & Wakefield's EVP of retail services, Robert Gibson, in a release. "Under new ownership, the brand is in growth mode and this represented the right opportunity at the right time." Filene's was acquired last year by Syms Corp.

C&W says Syms plans to keep both stores, using the 2234 Broadway space to expand the offerings now available at 2220 Broadway, which was the first Filene's location in Manhattan. Additionally, the new store will house a Syms Tailored & Tux location, reportedly the first of its kind in New York. The new store is scheduled to open this summer.

Gibson and his C&W associate, Thomas Citron, negotiated on behalf of Filene's. Friedland Properties, the landlord at 2234 Broadway, was represented in-house. Terms were not disclosed.

Six months ago, C&W put another expansion-minded retail tenant into a former Circuit City space on the Upper West Side. Raymour & Flanigan, the furniture chain, leased 30,000 of the 49,000 square feet at 1961 Broadway that was left vacant when the electronics chain liquidated in early 2009. Circuit City was at 1961 Broadway for a little more than a year before closing its doors; it had occupied the 2234 Broadway location since 2001.
