"International's something that has really been off the table for us for quite a while," Darden CEO Clarence Otis said during an analyst conference Wednesday in New York City. "We think the time has come."

Otis added that Mexico and the Persian Gulf would be the most likely markets in a joint-venture approach, but discussions are early enough that there wouldn't be any openings next year. Meanwhile, Darden plans to build between 58 and 74 restaurants next year, mostly Olive Gardens and LongHorn Steakhouses.
