The land obtained as a result of the court case, will allow the developer to create a docking facility, pool and oceanfront restaurant. If the court had ruled against the developer the project would have been shelved.
New York-based The Roth Law Firm PLLC represented the US-based development team in the court case. "My clients were at all times in the right legally. We are thrilled about developing this five star resort and are equally excited about the positive impact this resort will have on Belize in many ways," Roth says. "The outcome is very good for Belize as well as for my clients."
The 150-room resort is now in the design phase. According to David Bane, a managing partner with the unnamed development team, construction should complete in the next 18 to 24 months now that they have secured the two additional acres. When complete, Ma'loha Resort & Marina will be the island's largest hotel. The developers are also considering a casino component but plans have not been solidified on that front yet.
"This land is the proverbial diamond in the rough. It is in a unique location that is private and pristine yet close to San Pedro, while at the same time has coastal and river access," Bane says.
