Williams-Sonoma will close stores in larger markets where it operates a high unit count, executives said last week at an investor conference."Our strategy for store closings is to optimize our cost per square foot," CFO Sharon McCollam was quoted in the Wall Street Journal. The goal is not closing stores per se." She offered no specific locations for closure. The news comes after a strong holiday season by the company when same-store sales rose 6.5%, and management upped fourth-quarter guidance.Over its most recent fiscal year, Williams-Sonoma closed 34 stores, mostly in the Pottery Barn and Pottery Barn Kids chains, and opened 17, leaving the company with 627 units.
