As readers know, I am a big believer that America´s future liesin the vibrancy of its major metropolitan areas-the prime gatewaycities where most of our economic activity concentrates. But therecession and its aftermath push these cities to an inflectionpoint-after nearly 20 years of resurgence, severe budget cutbacksthreaten to undermine their vibrancy.
The most serious issue for 24-hour cities is crime. Nothing willtake a city down faster than high crime rates and fear on thestreets.
