SAN DIEGO-BioMed Realty Trust Inc. broke ground on the new176,000-square-foot research facility for Isis Pharmaceuticals the Carlsbad Oaks North Business Park site in Carlsbad, CA. Thenew facility will increase BioMed’s total leased space with Isis toapproximately 204,700 square feet.


As previously reported, Isis signeda 20-year lease with San Diego-based BioMed Realty Trust, toconsolidate the majority of its operations in the new facility.According to Dr. Stanley T. Crooke, chairman and CEO of thepharmaceuticals company, Isis worked closely with BioMed “to designa functional and efficient facility that will meet our needs forthe near-term and for the future.”


Upon completion of construction, Isis will lease the newbuilding for a 20-year term and consolidate the majority of itsoperations in the new facility. Commenting on the new facility, Dr.Crooke, points out that having a majority of its operations into asingle facility will “foster our collaborative approach to drugdiscovery and development.”


According to the Mayor of Carlsbad, Claude Lewis, “cultivatingthe life science industry has had a long-term, positive impact onour community, especially in terms of economic development andlocal jobs.”


Designed by the architectural firm of DGA of San Diego, thefacility is being constructed by DPR Construction Inc. of SanDiego. BioMed did not answer queries regardingconstruction cost or timeline by deadline.
