SHANGHAI-Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co. LLC has opened up a second hotel here in the $1-billion mixed-use Shanghai IFC complex in the Pudong district. The hotel is operating out of the top 18 floors of the 53-story South Tower, where HSBC this month moved its new China headquarters into 22 floors.
Architect Cesar Pelli designed the more than 3.5-million-square-foot complex, which will include the two office towers, a retail mall, the Ritz-Carlton and multifamily. The North Tower is expected to be complete by next year. Savills China is the leasing agent for the complex.
Sun Hung Kai Properties developed and will own the hotel. The sizes of the 285 rooms vary from 500 to 4,000 square feet, according to a Ritz-Carlton statement. The property also includes more than 25,000 square feet of meeting and conference space, with an 11,000-square-foot ballroom.
“As Shanghai has been experiencing exponential growth and many multi-national companies have opened in Pudong, we find it strategically viable for the Ritz-Carlton to be located on both sides of the Huangpu River,” said Rainer Burkle, area VP and general manager for the Pudong hotel. The company’s other property is the Ritz-Carlton Portman Shanghai at Puxi. The company operates seven hotels in China, and has two under development in Macao and Hong Kong.
