We hadn't heard much news from Southeast grocer Winn-Dixie over the last few years, at least any bad news. But that changed yesterday when the company announced it would close 30 stores by September.

Of course, the big bad news took place in 2005 when Winn-Dixie filed for bankruptcy, exited some regions and closed several stores. It operated 913 stores at that time and currently has 515 units.

The company did not say where it will be closing locations in this latest round, but a full list is supposed to be available on its Web site tomorrow. Management cited a tough economic environment and an overall cost-cutting strategy as the reasons for the closures.

Things seemed to be improving at Winn-Dixie. Sales in its latest quarter were down in the low single digits and net income improved during its third quarter. The company is also still in the midst of a major remodel program.

In fact, management plans to continue that program and is even looking at more store openings.

Have you seen improvements at Winn-Dixie over the last few years or are you afraid that we will see more store closures ahead?
