WASHINGTON, DC-Construction has begun on an expansion and renovation project at the Cato Institute's DC headquarters building. The project will nearly double the size of the building, located at 1000 Massachusetts Ave., NW.
The multi-phase expansion, which is being managed by Akridge, entails razing the smaller National Medical Association building located next door at 1012 10th St.--a property that Cato acquired last year. That phase of the project has already begun, with demolition occurring inside the structure.
When the building is razed, work will begin on expanding the headquarters building onto the next-door property. The building height will also be increased by one story, for a total of approximately 76,000 square feet.
All told, the new building will include expanded office space as well as a new 200-seat auditorium, conference and classroom facilities, a fitness center, a library and a roof terrace. The work will take about 19 months to deliver, during which Cato will continue to occupy the existing building. The architecture for the project is Gensler. Clark Construction is the general contractor.
