HONG KONG-Equinix Inc. plans to build a second International Business Exchange data center here for $63 million. This project will be near the company’s existing center in the western part of the New Territories region.
The new center will provide total capacity for more than 1,450 cabinet equivalents. The project’s first $20-million phase should be open by third quarter 2011, said company officials in a statement.
Jonathan Leung, managing director of the company’s greater China division, said that Hong Kong is a critical market for global customers. The country has one of the largest concentrations of banking and financial companies in the region. “The HK2 expansion will help service ongoing customer demand,” he said in a statement. The first center is already operating at more than 70%, he said.
This project is the company’s fourth data center expansion announcement in the Asia Pacific region. The company is looking to expand in Sydney and Singapore, and will move into the Shanghai market with a partnership with Shanghai Data Solutions. Equinix operates 90 data centers across 35 markets in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific.
