NEW YORK CITY-Insurance is one of the most necessary components to commercial real estate owners but often looked at as complicated. A free Zurich-sponsored webinar on GlobeSt.com, titled Uninsured Exposures: Are You Covered?, dispels some of that mystery and gives listeners other valuable information on how to best protect their investments. The program originally ran on Oct. 17, but a replay is now available.

Panel members include Mike Halvey, senior vice president of real estate at Zurich; Joffre Mishall, Zurich's assistant vice president of property claims; Tim Bunt, senior vice president and chief risk officer at CB Richard Ellis and Robert Hartwig, president of the Insurance Information Institute. John Salustri, GlobeSt.com's content director, served as moderator.

One fact supplied by Hartwig which underscores the important of having adequate insurance coverage: 25% of businesses don't reopen after a catastrophic event because of gaps protection. Also stressed was that assets need to be appraised for their replacement costs, not their current market value.

Halvey says that property owners are the ones in control and shouldn't be shy with questions about their policies. "Ask all the questions until you get all the answers that you're comfortable with."
