CAIRO-Two companies with Disney ties have announced plans to build a large theme park near the Cairo International Airport. The venture includes Denver-based Avatar Management LLC and Sudbury, MA-based Apogee Attractions Inc.

Apogee is most known for the development of Disney’s Epcot Center, the largest construction project of its time when built for $1.3 billion in 1982. Avatar’s president and CEO Erich Hauser also has a Disney tie, as his late father Dwight Hauser was a screenplay writer for the entertainment icon.

The venture said in a statement that it plans to build a Disney-esque entertainment complex on 1,500 acres here. The property will include a theme park, two water parks, a racetrack, a luxury shopping mall, a hotel and a convention center. This complex will be built in the New Cairo neighborhood, according to the statement.

Hauser said that GDP is rising steadily in Egypt at 7% per year, bringing in a strong consumer class. “The country’s 80 million inhabitants and its burgeoning middle class of consumers are creating a strong demand for world-class, quality entertainment in this young, vibrant economy,” he said in the statement.

The venture did not say how much it will cost to build the complex. However, Avatar said it’s total list of current projects, including these parks as well as a Solar Power Field Plant in the Upper Egypt region, will reach up to $33 billion. The theme park project includes shipments of a mineral called Zeolite, which can form a stable greening process in the desert for new development, according to an Avatar statement.
