NEW YORK CITY-Growth of its e-commerce operations has prompted Macy’s Inc. to expand its Midtown offices by 56,242 square feet, the Cincinnati-based retailer announced Tuesday. The expansion, which will accommodate an estimated 260 new Macys.com employees over the next two years, brings its total presence within Monday Properties’ 1440 Broadway to more than 161,000 square feet, according to a release from the landlord.

Additionally, Macy’s is negotiating for additional space within 100 Third Ave. to house more employees for Bloomingdales.com, which is already based there, a spokesman for the retailer tells GlobeSt.com. It’s not yet certain how much additional space that would entail, the spokesman says. Macy’s plans to add 115 Bloomingdales.com positions in Midtown within the next two years, up from approximately 200 at present.

“This is the latest cycle of expansion with Macy’s that we arranged in advance of an expiring block of space,” Brian Robin, COO of Monday Properties, says in a release. He adds that the retailer’s continued growth in an office property that is 100% leased “underscores the recovery of the Manhattan leasing market.  We came to terms with Macy’s before we began any formal marketing of the block.” The existing Macy’s footprint at the 743,000-square-foot 1440 Broadway houses about 400 Macys.com employees.

Scott Gottlieb and Michael Laginestra, both vice chairmen with CB Richard Ellis, represented Macy’s in the transaction. A CBRE spokesman declines to comment on the deal. Jordan Berger of Monday Properties represented the landlord.

The Midtown expansions announced by Macy’s occur as the retailer reaffirmed plans to expand its site development and operations organization in downtown San Francisco by roughly 200 positions over the next two years. As GlobeSt.com reported this past October, Macy’s took an additional 37,737 square feet of office space at 685 Market St. in that city.

Additionally, Macy’s Systems & Technology, which supports the macys.com and bloomingdales.com e-commerce technology platform, expects to add about 150 positions over the next two years at its central campus in the Atlanta suburb of Johns Creek, GA. The company is buying a building at 5955 State Bridge Rd. there, which MST already partially occupies, and expanding within the property. This would bring MST’s Johns Creek workforce to more than 1,200. Macy’s also plans to add a fulfillment center near Martinsburg, WV and expand an existing one near Portland, TN.
