WASHINGTON, DC-Some of the large government lease deals that have been circling are now starting to land. Within the past few days, Akridge announced that it inked a new 10-year lease with the Internal Revenue Service for 100,500 square feet at 999 N. Capitol St., NE in the Union Square office complex. Akridge’s Benjamin A. Meisel and Katherine A. Burton handled the transaction along with Cushman & Wakefield’s Peter Marcin, Brian Sullivan, Matthew Lynch and Lauren LeHew. Whitney Aaronson of Jones Lang LaSalle’s Public Institutions Group represented the IRS.

In Northern Virginia, the State Department signed a lease expansion for 243,000 square feet at the Pomponio Plaza East building, located in at 1800 N. Kent St. in Arlington, VA. The building is owned by the Wade Co. LLC. JLL’s Mark Stadsklev, Gary Arabak, Jae Lee and Matt Witlin represented the government. David Alperstein of FD Partners represented the Wade Co. The government has expanded its space by approximately 66,000 square feet in this lease, Lee tells GlobeSt.com. “I think the market will see more such deals close in Northern Virginia in the coming weeks.”

At Union Square, owned by CIM Group and managed by Akridge, renovations are being completed. The IRS is expected to occupy the space beginning in January 2012. The agency is relocating from its current office space at 1750 Pennsylvania Ave., NW. Another large deal was inked by the Federal Reserve, which took 150,000 square feet at Tishman Speyer’s International Square.
