LONDON-John Nelson, chairman of Hammerson PLC’s Board of Directors, has been selected to become the next chairman of Lloyd’s of London. Nelson will continue to hold his seat at Hammerson, a group that develops and manages about $8.6 billion of retail and office property in the United Kingdom and France.

Nelson will take over for current Chairman Lord Levene, who is retiring. Nelson, who joined Hammerson in 2004, will take over the Lloyd’s post in October. He also serves as deputy chairman of Kingfisher PLC, a post that will retire from later this year.

He said in a statement that he looks forward to steering one of the world’s leasing insurance companies. He said the recent global catastrophes, such as the earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand and the floods in Australia, highlighted the vital role insurance plays in helping communities and businesses rebuild after a disaster.
