WASHINGTON, DC-The law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom is renewing a large chunk of space that it occupies in the East End, plus tacking on an additional 50,000 sf as an expansion. This brings the firm’s total amount of space downtown to 414,631 sf. Of that amount, 213,674 sf is in Tishman Speyer’s Commercial National Bank Building. The 15-year contract is the largest private sector transaction for the District so far this year, Tishman says in its announcement of the deal. The company declined to comment to GlobeSt.com outside of the information provided in the release.

The firm also inked 200,957 sf at 1440 New York Ave., NW, which is separately owned by ING Clarion Partners and adjacent to the Commercial National Bank Building. The Wall Street Journal reported that the firm is expanding by 50,000 sf in anticipation of future growth.

The Commercial National Bank Building, which totals 224,873 sf, consists of two interconnected buildings: 700 14th St., which is a historic structure, and 1420 New York Ave., NW. Skadden occupies the vast majority of both sites. Andrea Reid of Axis Realty Advisors and Elizabeth Cooper, Thomas Doughty, Philip Leibow and Greg McCavera of Jones Lang LaSalle represented the tenant in this transaction. Dan Dooley and Scott Franklin of Tishman Speyer negotiated the transaction on behalf of the owner.

As GlobeSt.com reported, another law firm took space in an East End property recently. Rothwell, Figg, Ernst & Manbeck, PC, signed a contract to lease 42,181 sf at The Westory, located at 607 14th St., NW. The law firm is relocating from 1425 K St., NW.
