DAYTON, OH-St. Louis-based architect firm HOK has designed a new $135 million new hospital for the Kettering Health Network here. The Indu and Raj Soin Medical Center, named after noted local philanthropists, is to feature a new “town square” concept that allows simple access by guests.

The six-story, 285,000-square-foot hospital will be built with an adjoining 120,000-square-foot medical office building, on 22 acres at Pentagon Boulevard and Royal Gateway Road. With 131 beds planned and expandable to 300 beds, the hospital will be completed by first quarter 2012. Other features will include emergency care, general surgery, cardiac care, a mother-baby unit, critical care, and medical imaging and diagnostic services. There’s also dedicated space for an additional tower, if needed.

Sheila Cahnman, group vice president and regional leader for the HOK Healthcare Group, tells GlobeSt.com that what makes this project special is the design of the main lobby as a “town square.” The lobby will open out, literally, right away to all the places that a hotel guest or patient wants to find, she says, a novel concept that seems opposed to hospital wings that can quickly become maze-like.

“We can do this design because we’re going up from basically a green field,” Cahnman says. “One of the stressful things about walking in a hospital is not knowing where you’re going. The idea is to make it very clear so patients and families can see where they’re going. From the lobby you’ll actually be able to see all the major destinations, such as registration, emergency, dining, the elevators, etc.”

This new facility will be Kettering’s eighth hospital, with locations such as Greene Memorial Hospital and Fort Hamilton Hospital.
