BETHESDA, MD-JBG Cos. plans to start work on a companion project to its North Bethesda Market tower complex, which houses Whole Foods Market and restaurants Seasons52 and Brio. The project, called North Bethesda Market II, was recently approved by the Montgomery County Planning Board.
Similar to North Bethesda Market tower, the new project will be a mix of retail, office, and residential development in the White Flint submarket. The new development will be next to North Bethesda Market, one block from the White Flint Metro station.
“The positive response to North Bethesda Market since its opening two years ago proved that there is strong demand for apartments, retail and restaurants when built in a pedestrian-oriented mixed-use project in this corridor,” said Greg Trimmer, principal of JBG, in a prepared statement. JBG did not return a call from GlobeSt.com in time for publication.
Topping out at 24 stories, North Bethesda Market II will be the tallest structure in Montgomery County. It will consist of approximately 340 apartments, 150,000 square feet of office and 130,000 square feet of retail, including a multi-screen movie theater. Construction will start this year and the project and deliver in late 2014. It will also sport a new plaza and sidewalks and a “grand staircase” with commissioned artwork.
North Bethesda Market, JGB’s earlier project, includes 200,000 square feet of commercial space and nearly 400 apartments, 240 of which are located in a 24-story tower with glass wall architecture. The Whole Foods, which opened its doors last April, occupies 65,000 square foot. Also, LA Fitness occupies 50,000 square feet at the building.
